Until the late 1980’s the Black Truffle (Tuber melansporum) was only found in the northern hemisphere where it was cultivated in trufferies and also harvested from the wild. The cultivation of truffles in the southern hemisphere first took place in New Zealand as part of a government initiative. Australia quickly followed suit with the first trufferie in Australia being planted in Tasmania. Since then trufferies have been planted in numerous regions around Australia with successful harvests in Western Australia, Tasmania, New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory and Victoria.
Being located in the southern hemisphere means Australia produces in the European off season. The established markets of Europe and America have a high demand for truffle products and exports to these markets have been increasing. The demand for truffles in Asia has been rising over the last few years as the increase in the standard of living opens whole new markets.
To date the Australian truffle industry has focused on producing the Périgord Black Truffle (Tuber melansporum), some burgundy (Tuber unicinatum) and summer (Tuber aestivum) truffle have been planted recently.
